The Titanic was ready to crash into a giant iceberg, but the boat turned abruptly, causing the iceberg to scratch the side of the Titanic, causing the boat to start flooding and sinking. Two government investigations took place immediately after the disaster, revealing that no weakness in the ship caused it to sink, but the iceberg itself. The blame was soon put on the captain, Edward John Smith who was racing at 22 knots in an area full of ice at night. Later on in 1989 an oceanographer named Robert Ballard found the ships remains, after searching for years. The ship's remains were 2.5 miles down on the ocean ground. He soon realized it had split into two while still on the surface. This soon brought attention to the Titanic once again, and people soon wondered how the ship split in two.
